Making the Big Time Where You Are

I read a book a long time ago and the main point of the story is that you have to make where you the big time and do the best you can do at that level. At the time I was happily working with collegiate sports at the NAIA level, miss those days (10 month contract with summers completely free). Not that working Division I athletics is supposed to be superior by any means. Athletic Training is athletic training and you can find some of the best athletic trainers at the less prestigious jobs. I have heard plenty of stories and witnessed sub-par athletic care with some of the best athletes in the world. Unfortunately a lot of times it is not about what you know but who you know.

But I am getting off track a little. What this post is about is being happy where you are and not always looking to go somewhere else. For the past few years I have been trying to figure out how I was going to work more with the high profile sports. Not letting myself be happy working with sports that gave me the opportunity to enjoy holidays with my family and have a little more free time. I figured to be considered the best I needed to be working with sports that received more national attention (football or basketball). Is that the true measure of an Athletic Trainer?

High profile (revenue) sports in athletic training mean higher time demands and more work a lot of times. Is that really what I am after in my search for job satisfaction? I have so many aspirations in life and with my job, but on thing for sure. Family is #1 and as long as I can provide for my family and spend time with them life is good. I need quit wanting something better (if it is even out there) and be happy with my position and continue to do the best I can everyday. One of my mottos in life is "work hard, play hard" and I need to stay focused on that. Maybe someday I will be recognized for what I do, maybe not. One thing for sure though, I am going to enjoy the ride and do what I can to be the best.

Starting Over

I figure it is time to start over writing on this blog. I have had good intentions for over a year now but haven't got into a groove. Make your own destiny is what people say and I need to start following that path. College athletics is getting ready to begin another year and with that comes new experiences and chances to make ourselves better.

NEVER STOP LEARNING!
